Our Grand New Columbus Street After years of planning and construction, the Columbus Street project is almost complete. Under the leadership of Mayor Eric Sandine, this 1.3 million dollar road project will redefine the look of Downtown Lithopolis forever. The project took a worn out street, used by thousands of cars daily, and transformed it into a showcase for homes and businesses along the route. For the many residents, business owners, and commuters who use this road frequently, the widened road and smooth street is a welcomed path for daily travel. Another wonderful feature from the project is the new sidewalk on both Walnut and Market Streets. Many people are not aware of all the initial work that went into completing this construction project. The old street, curbs, sidewalks, trees, and everything else involved in the first phase of the renovation, needed to be removed, or relocated. As with most renovation projects, this beginning phase is essential to allowing for the successful completion of the project. A major part of the reconstruction phase, required the relocation of overhead wires so that the end result is an unobstructed view down Columbus Street. The widening of the street and sidewalks is another significant change. Ornate, decorative lamp posts and handmade business rails give an esthetically pleasing touch to the final renovation. Each lamp post is equipped with 110 volt electric outlets and flag holders. The handmade railing, constructed by a regional blacksmith, will last much longer than the standard aluminum railing. The new LED traffic signals are a cost saving feature that are instrumental for traffic safety. Several salvageable materials from the Columbus Street project will be recycled for future use in the community of Lithopolis. Wood support beams from the old culvert were collected and stored for future milling ventures. In addition, the large quarry stones from the culvert will be utilized to create a play area next to the Municipal Building. |
